The Plog Club: Indus International School Students Lead the Change Against Plastic Pollution

Bangalore, Karnataka (India), September 30, 2024: A group of students from Pegasus House at Indus International School, Bangalore, have taken an important step towards addressing the environmental issue of growing plastic waste in the city. On World Clean-Up Day 2024, they formally launched The Plog Club, an innovative initiative that combines environmental action with physical activity.

The Plog Club sees its origin as a small initiative that was done with the aim of raising awareness about plastic pollution within schools and surrounding communities. It all started with a few dedicated students and teachers who were passionate about making a difference. However, this year, the team—led by Housemaster Merilyn Sunny—expanded their vision after realizing the need for a bigger platform to address Bangalore’s growing plastic waste issue.

“We started small, but our dreams were always big,” says Merilyn Sunny. “We wanted to create an initiative that not only cleans up our city but also inspires others to join the cause.”

The Plog Club has made tremendous progress since its debut. The team has carried out two effective ‘plog runs’ that combined jogging with litter collection in strategic areas like Sarjapur and Electronic City. Students gathered over 100 kg of plastic waste during these events, showing the effectiveness of group effort and the power of the community.

A student participant shared, “Plogging is not just about cleaning up; it’s about changing our mindset. We’re showing that taking care of our environment can be fun and rewarding.”

In addition to collecting trash, the team displayed remarkable creativity by repurposing it. Last year, the team built a completely operational storeroom for their community school using 24,000 recycled PET bottles.

This innovative approach to waste management sets The Plog Club apart from traditional clean-up initiatives. By repurposing collected plastic into useful items, the team is closing the loop on plastic waste and demonstrating tangible benefits to the community. This initiative’s success lies in its multifaceted approach:
